Background | Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is an arthropod-borne alphavirus that causes Chikungunya fever, a re-emerging disease characterized by high fever, rash, and arthralgia. The E2 envelope glycoprotein is a structural protein that forms heterodimers with the E1 glycoprotein and is displayed on the viral surface as part of trimeric spike complexes. E2 is primarily responsible for receptor binding and host cell attachment, playing a key role in viral entry. As a major target of neutralizing antibodies, the E2 protein is widely used in serological diagnostics, vaccine development, and antiviral research. |
